How does a glow stick work?

I think there is some sort of chemical that is set off when the stick is bend to a certain extent which ignites some sort of glow/light.

I think there is some sort of chemical that is set off when the stick is bend to a certain extent which breaks a very thin glass cylinder which holds a chemical and that mixes with the other chemical to make it glow.

I think my second answer was bang on and that there was a glass cylinder that broke and set off a glow.

Glow sticks are used by campers, divers and many other people to create light. To activate a glow stick you just bend the plastic tube filled with a chemical and that will break the glass cylinder holding another chemical causing light which makes the stick glow.

Who created these?
Why were they created?
How did they come up with this?

Synthesis is basically progress from prior knowledge to new knowledge.
